On the 5th of May, it’s National Liberation Day in the Netherlands. On this day, we celebrate the liberation of our country in 1945 and we reflect on the great value of freedom, democracy, and human rights. And how does that show? Amsterdam

Amsterdam has several festivals that have been on the calendar for years. Het Vrije Westen on Westergasterrein combines the strengths of the surrounding clubs and bars to wonderful festival. Music, spoken word and children’s entertainment swirl into an unforgettable day.

De Roode Bioscoop presents a new festival dedicated to artists who fled to the Netherlands. Liberation festival Ontsnapte Klanken is held in the theatre located on the Haarlemmerplein.

Amsterdams Verbond invited its favourite ‘allies’ from the Amsterdam nightlife scene to the 7 stages on the festival grounds. Among others, Club Nyx, Disco Dolly, Vondel Disco and the Kopstootbar play a major role during this festival at Olympisch Stadion.

Celebrate Liberation Day on Museumplein during the Bevrijdingsdans Festival (Liberation Dance Festival). Various dance performances and workshops are held to celebrate freedom.

At the NDSM Wharf an exciting programme is put together for young and old: from making kites in the children’s workshop to making connections through food.

The Homo-monument (gay monument) in Amsterdam celebrates its 35th anniversary. On 5 May, a photo exposition is opened with live music by various DJs.

Finish this special day at Concert op de Amstel, where everyone is welcome from 9 P.M.. Artists including Fresku, Anita Meyer, and Tania Kross are performing on the floating stage.
