The best activities to do in Rotterdam with a group of friends. Inntel Hotels’ own Joost knows Rotterdam inside and out. In the third edition of tips from local experts, he shares his tips and to-dos.

Who is the group-activity expert?

My name is Joost van Gils and I recently started as Director of Food & Beverage at Mainport and Inntel Hotels Rotterdam Centre. I have lived in Rotterdam from the time I was a student. During this time, I have seen the city grow into the vibrant city it is today.

What makes Rotterdam the ideal place to go to for a bachelor(ette) party or another special occasion?

Rotterdam is a very vibrant city. On every street corner, you’ll find the nicest restaurants and bars. The whole year long there are music, cultural and film festivals. What makes it even more special is the river Maas. You can choose a boat ride at a thrilling pace or a bit slower so you can see all the sights.

What do you and your friends do as a group in Rotterdam?

The nicest thing to do is to rent a boat with your friends. Be sure to take a well-stocked cool box with you on the trip and sail the Rotte on a beautiful summer day. Whether you sail to the Kralingse Plas or the wonderful Rottemeren, in an instant you feel like you’re in another world. Dock your boat next to the restaurants by the water or go swimming in the lake. I can’t imagine a finer day.

Do you and your friends have certain traditions during a city trip?

We don’t really have any traditions. But we do always end up (planned or not) in the Witte de Withstreet. This is the hotspot of Rotterdam for those who like to go out. It has many restaurants, bars and terraces all down the street. The relaxed atmosphere is a perfect way to end the day.

Finally: Do you have any tips to make the city trip with friends a great success?

If you don’t feel like renting a boat you could also buy a ticket for the Waterbus. This is the public transport connection between Rotterdam and the surrounding cities. Besides being very practical, it’s also a nice way to see the city from the water. Another tip is the most beautiful Zoo in Europe. Diergaarde Blijdorp where animals are not locked up in cages but are able to roam around freely in the park. Park on the Westzeedijk or the Vroesenpark in the north of Rotterdam is also well worth a visit. Take your picknick basket and barbecue with you and enjoy the sun and each other’s company.
