Bicycle routes in the Zaan region

There are many great bicycle routes in the Zaan region. They will take you past beautiful landscapes, mills, Zaan houses, picturesque villages and historic forts. Grab a bike and picnic basket and enjoy one of the beautiful bicycle routes we selected for you.

Zaanse schans

Most likely you will immediately think of the Zaanse Schans when you think of the Zaan area. It is a beautiful area which is also perfectly suited to cycling. They offer 2 cycle routes at the Zaanse Schans. The short one is 8 kilometres and is called “hotspot Wormerveer”. It will give you a glimpse of the industrial area and off course the famous mills. The longer route called “Around the Noord” is 30 kilometres. It includes the same sights as the shorter one. It will take you on a ferry ride and past some beautiful Dutch landscapes.

Want to go even further? Take the “Zaanstreek” route which is approximately 49 kilometres. During this route you cycle through the nature reserves the Wormer- and Jisperveld and the Weijenbus-Vroonmeer, but also along the historic river the Zaan with beautiful views on the wooden mills of the Zaanse Schans, the typical green wooden houses and the monumental warehouses and factories from the 19th century.

Past those typical villages

Villages in the Zaan region have a lot to offer regarding history, culture and beautiful houses. The cycle route past the former island Marken is approximately 60 kilometres and starts in Volendam. A quaint fisherman’s village which a lot of Dutch performers call home. Besides these famous villages the route will also take you through beautiful nature reserves that will give you the perfect opportunity for a nice outdoor picnic.

Zuiderzee route

There’s a defence line around Amsterdam called “De Stelling van Amsterdam”. It includes forts and batteries, but also a lot of fun hiking and cycling routes. The “Zuiderzeeroute” is one of the cycling routes. This route is 42 kilometres and starts and ends at the train station of Purmerend. The route will take you past famous villages such as Edam and Volendam. Enabling you to score some cheese or eel along the way.
