Architecture

Amsterdam is famous for its canal houses and bridges. When you take a stroll by the canals you will want to keep your camera in hand to shoot lots of pictures.

Begijnhof

One of Amsterdam’s hidden treasures is Het Begijnhof. This area was founded for a group of devoted women who cared for the ill and taught children. Het Begijnhof consists out of small houses and a church around a courtyard that used to be closed at night. You can reach this oasis of tranquillity from the busy Spui. Here you can also admire one of the two wooden houses in Amsterdam.

House on the three canals

A unique canal house is the house on the three canals. This photo-worthy building has 3 stepped gables. The state monument can be found at the crossing between Oudezijds Achterburgwal, Oudezijds Voorburgwal and Grimburgwal. You can also admire the Sleutelbrug here. A vault bridge with three passages. From here you have a beautiful view of the house on the three canals.

Some people think the Dutch all wear wooden shoes and a funny hat. When and where were these kinds of costumes worn? You’ll learn all about them in the Dutch Costume Museum. It is even possible to take a picture in costume here.

The rest of the ingredients make the ever changing flavours. Every time you visit you’ll discover something new.

Speakeasy’s

The term speakeasy was first used during the prohibition in the United States. Since there was a ban on alcohol hidden bars were founded where you had to speak in hushed tones or easy.. Nowadays speakeasy’s are hip places where you need a password to enter. Amsterdam has a few that serve delicious cocktails. Reservations? Those are made by phone on the day itself.

Door74

Walk through a black door near Rembrandtplein and travel back to the roaring twenties at Door74. Immerse yourself in their story’s and enjoy those delicious cocktails. A recommendation is the 3 course cocktail menu. When you order this menu you’ll receive a matching bite with each cocktail.

Hiding in Plain Sight

The speakeasy with the fitting name Hiding in Plain Sight is located near the Nieuwmarkt. Come inside and enjoy Old Fashioned cocktails made by stylish bartenders. Are you in town on a Thursday? Every Thursday you can listen to the sweet notes from the Gypsy Swing Band.
